Why Our Preschoolers Study Famous Artists (And What They're Really Learning)

This Friday, the hallways and classrooms at Child's World Woodland Hills will look a little different. Every preschool room will be transformed into a gallery, displaying the original artwork our children have created after spending a full school year studying two famous artists.
It is one of the most meaningful events we host, and the learning behind it goes much deeper than the finished pieces on the wall.
What it means to study an artist
When we say our preschoolers study famous artists, we mean real study. They look at the artist's work closely and over time. They learn about the artist's life. They start to notice things: the colors an artist chose, the shapes they repeated, the feelings their work creates. Then they try it themselves. They do not copy. They respond, with their own hands, their own choices, and their own four-year-old understanding of what is beautiful.
That process, looking closely, thinking carefully, and then creating, is one of the richest things we can offer a young child.
What children actually gain
The art is the visible outcome. But here is what is happening underneath it:
• Fine motor skills develop as children use brushes, mix colors, and work with different materials.
• Visual literacy grows as children learn to "read" a piece of art and talk about what they see.
• Creative confidence builds when children see that their ideas are worth expressing and that their work is worth sharing.
• Focus and persistence deepen as children return to a project over days and weeks, not just one afternoon.
What the Art Show means for your family
When you walk through the Preschool Art Show on Friday, May 1, you are not just looking at cute children's drawings. You are seeing evidence of real intellectual work. Ask your child about their piece. Let them explain it to you. Notice how they talk about it, with pride, with detail, with ownership.
That is the whole-child education that Child's World Woodland Hills has been building for over 30 years, showing up in every brushstroke.
The show runs from 3:00 to 5:30 PM. Stop by at pickup and let your child be your guide.
