The Gift of a Slow Moment: Why Reading Together Matters More Than You Think

In a busy week full of pickups and drop-offs and packed schedules, it can be hard to find moments that feel genuinely calm and connected. That is exactly why we created Muffins with Mom at Child's World Woodland Hills, and it is exactly why we think you should plan to stop by on Thursday, May 7.
The setup is simple: a muffin, a story, and your child right beside you. But what happens in that half hour is anything but simple.
What reading aloud actually does for young children
Reading together is one of the most powerful things a parent can do with a young child, and the research behind it is both deep and consistent. When you read aloud with your child, you are:
Building their vocabulary at a rate that everyday conversation cannot match. Books use more complex and varied language than we do in normal speech.
Strengthening their attention span. Sitting with a story requires children to focus, follow a sequence, and hold information over time. That is practice for every kind of learning they will do.
Building their comprehension and empathy. Stories ask children to understand characters, follow cause and effect, and imagine how people feel. These are foundational academic and social skills.
Creating a sense of safety and connection. Being read to by someone you love is deeply comforting for children. The warmth of that experience becomes associated with books and language for the rest of their lives.
Why the moment matters as much as the book
Research also shows that the quality of the relationship in the reading experience matters as much as the reading itself. When a child sits beside their mom and shares a story, something happens beyond word acquisition. They feel seen. They feel chosen. They feel loved.
That is what we are celebrating on May 7 at our Woodland Hills campus. Not a reading lesson. A moment of pure connection between a mother and her child.
Stop by between 3:30 and 5:30 PM at pickup. Grab a muffin. Pick a story. Let your little one choose the book. That moment will stay with both of you.
