Reading Together: Why a Book and a Donut Is One of the Best Gifts a Dad Can Give

It does not take much. A donut, a chair, and a book. That is all Donuts with Dad asks of the fathers, grandpas, and father figures who walk through our doors at Child's World Woodland Hills. But what happens in those few minutes of reading together is anything but small.

Why Shared Reading Matters

Reading aloud with a child is one of the most powerful things a parent can do for early development. Research shows it builds vocabulary, strengthens listening skills, and creates the kind of emotional closeness that helps children feel safe and supported in the world. When a dad sits down and opens a book with his child, even for ten minutes, he is doing something that echoes long after the pages close.

At Child's World Woodland Hills, books are a central part of every day. Our teachers read to children across all programs, from infants and toddlers hearing the rhythm and warmth of a story for the first time, to our TK/K students who can now read along. We believe that a love of reading is something that grows in the spaces between structured lessons, in quiet moments with people who love you.

An Invitation to Slow Down

Dads, grandpas, and father figures are invited to stop by during pickup, grab something sweet, and read a story together with their child. The books are here. The time is built in. All you have to do is show up.

For children, having a father figure sit beside them and share a story communicates something words cannot always say: you matter, this moment matters, and I am here. That message is one of the most important things a child can carry into their day.

Donuts with Dad is on Wednesday, June 10, from 3:00 to 5:30 PM at Child's World Woodland Hills. Stop by when you pick up your child, pour yourself some coffee, and settle in for a story. No RSVP needed.
